What Makes a Chair Weatherproof?

Products

If you've recently decked out your outdoor areas with furniture, or are looking to do so, you may be asking yourself what makes it weatherproof. Or perhaps your clients have asked you that very question.

Let us explain how it works.

Weatherproofing a chair is very material dependant. Each have their own strengths and weaknesses and can be protected further in different ways.

The products need to be able to retain their structural integrity through the seasons. Different weathers cause different complications.

RAIN = Mould / Rot / Rust / Warping
SUN = Fading / Cracking / Heat retention
WIND = Susceptible to damage

Gosh, there's a whole lot to think about isn't there?
Good job we take all of that into consideration for you when we hunt for our furniture.

Take a look at what makes each material weatherproof:

WOOD

Types of wood used for outdoor furniture:
Teak | Larch | Cedar | Iroko | European Oak

Generally speaking, hardwoods are the most durable option for outdoor furniture, as soft woods can't always take the burden of being outside. Larch and cedar are two exceptions to that rule. Teak is the most popular choice. Strength and a naturally high oil content are the features that really make these woods suitable.

Maintenance tips:
A gentle clean with warm soapy water and a bristle brush.
You can also add UV preservatives to retain their golden colour.

METAL

Types of metal used for outdoor furniture:
Aluminium | Steel

Metal is a strong material and those with high density are less susceptible to damage than those with low density. Steel is particularly good as it is heavy so will not tip over easily. Both metals are highly weather resistant and immune to corrosion. A powder coating adds to their resistance whilst adding an aesthetic touch. If the metal is galvanised it has the addition of a zinc coating which further prevents corrosion.

Maintenance tips:
A powder coating adds resistance.
Clean gently with soapy water and a sponge.

POLY / PLASTIC

Types of plastic used for outdoor furniture:
Various Polymers | Resin

A low maintenance material that is resistant to fading in the sun due to the fact that the colour is injected all the way through the material rather than added on afterwards. Some synthetics are also made to look like rattan and woven for aesthetic effect. Nylon, polyethylene and PVC are used to make synthetic resins. They are also good at remaining a comfortable temperature in the sun.

Maintenance tips:
Just clean with soapy water and a soft sponge.
